Washington hasn't decided what they'll do with Kirk Cousins and won't do so until after the season despite reports that they plan to place the franchise tag on the quarterback if a long-term deal can't be reached.
Washington wants to see how the remainder of the season plays out.
Placing the tag on Cousins is projected to cost Washington nearly $24 million in 2017.
Washington is prepared to use the franchise tag on Kirk Cousins again in the 2017 offseason if they are unable to agree upon a long-term deal.
Cousins is being paid a guaranteed $19.95 million in 2016 after he became the second quarterback to play under the franchise tag, joining Drew Brees in 2005 with the San Diego Chargers.
Cousins is fifth in the NFL in Total QBR this season and has thrown for 3,540 yards with 20 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
The franchise quarterback tag for the 2017 season will be $23,943,600.
Kirk Cousins has likely done enough to secure himself a major contract with his production this season playing under the franchise tag.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport spoke with three general managers about the Redskins' QB conundrum this week. All three executives anticipate that Cousins' next contract will be worth more than $20 million annually, placing him in exclusive company with the highest-paid players in the league.
Cousins has the highest passer rating of any quarterback over their last 20 starts.
Washington was unable to agree upon a long-term deal with Cousins in the offseason.
It was reported over the weekend that Matthew Stafford, who is signed through 2017, will seek $25 million annually in his next contract.
The figure would make him the NFL's highest-paid player. Andrew Luck signed an extension with a $24.6 million average annual value this past offseason.
On Wednesday, Stafford downplayed the report.
"That was news to me, to tell you the truth," Stafford said. "Hadn’t, obviously, had any thoughts of that in my mind, to tell you the truth. I don’t know where that came from or how it got out there, but I’m focused on our team, this season, playing well this week. That’s really all I care about."
The Green Bay Packers have claimed Christine Michael off waivers.
Michael was released by the Seattle Seahawks after Week 10 with Thomas Rawls coming back from injury and the emergence of C.J. Prosise.
Michael rushed 117 times for 469 yards and six touchdowns this season.
The Minnesota Vikings have signed Kai Forbath to replace Blair Walsh, whom the team released Tuesday after his fourth missed extra point of the season.
Forbath, who kicked for Washington from 2012 to 2015 and spent part of the 2015 season with the New Orleans Saints, and was one of six kickers to try out for the Vikings last week.
Walsh, who signed a four-year, $13 million contract extension with the Vikings in July 2015, is still owed $1.5 million on his signing bonus next spring.
There are four teams that Tony Romo could end up on next season if his situation with the Dallas Cowboys behind Dak Prescott remains unchanged.
In no particular order, Adam Schefter reports Romo could end up on the Chicago Bears, New York Jets, Denver Broncos or Arizona Cardinals.
If Prescott continues to merit playing as the starter, the Cowboys would struggle to carry Romo's $14 million base salary.
The Seattle Seahawks have released Christine Michael.
Michael, who started seven games this season, rushed 117 times for 469 yards. C.J. Prosise has played more snaps than Michael the last two weeks and Thomas Rawls is set to return from a broken fibula this week.
The Minnesota Vikings have released Blair Walsh after auditioning a handful of other kickers last week.
Walsh missed an extra point in Sunday's loss against Washington, bringing his total up to four misses this season.
Walsh also missed a 27-field goal in last year's playoffs against the Seahawks.
On Monday, as Walsh worked out at the Vikings' facility on his own, head coach Mike Zimmer remained noncommittal about the kicker's future.
"We're going to see what all the options are," he said. "We're going to see what the options are at tackle. We're going to see what the options are at kicker, and then make a determination and go."
